Our Junior Colts (Under 16 Boys) have made the 2018 Grand Final this weekend at Lobethal Oval against the Hahndorf Football Club. Details of the match and a preview can be found below.

The Blackwood and Hahndorf Football Clubs have played each other on four previous occasions throughout 2018. The ledger currently stands at two wins to Blackwood and two wins to Hahndorf. A recap of the three matches goes like this:

Round 4 at Hahndorf Oval – Blackwood lose by 33 points
The young Woods got jumped in the first half trailing eight goals to two at half time. Fighting hard in the second half, the Woods outscored the Magpies for the remainder of the match but the margin was too big to pull back. Round 11 at U-Install-It Kitchens Oval – Blackwood win by 102 points
Playing for the Courier Cup, the Woods controlled the match from the first bounce kicking 17 goals to none to run out 102 point winners. 10 individual players hit the scoreboard with Mitch Robertson kicking four majors, whilst Eduard Van den berg was named best player again. View full scorecard

Round 18 at Hahndorf Oval – Blackwood lose by 28 points
Playing off for top spot on the ladder, the undermanned Woods conceded 19 scoring shots to go down by 28 points and finish in second spot. Nathan Houston, Jaxin Faehrmann, Sam Matters hit the scoreboard whilst Oscar Milsom was named best player. View full scorecard

Second Semi Final at Uraidla Oval – Blackwood win by 21 points
Playing for the fourth time in 2018, the Woods kicked seven goals to four after quarter time to record a 21 point victory and move straight through to the Grand Final. Statistical match up

From the 18 minor rounds, both sides ranked one and two in the competition for attack and defence. The Woods ranked number one in both areas (83.9 points for and 18.2 points against) whilst Hahndorf ranked number two (71.8 points for and 24.8 points against)

From the 20 matches both sides have played, the Woods have used a total of 35 players with 20.0% (7) having either 19 or 20 matches. This compares to the Magpies who have used 26 players with 38.5% (10) having played 19 or 20 matches.

Of the matches the Woods have played, a total of 22 different players have featured in the best players (71.4% of all players) with Eduard Van den Berg (76.9%), Noah Brown (70.6%) and Henry Smith (62.5%) featuring in the best the most. The top five goal kickers for the Woods have kicked a combined 111 goals (44.7% of all goals) compared to 138 (55.7%) by the top five Magpies goal scorers.

Historical Grand Finals

In the last eight junior grand finals, Hahndorf and Blackwood have played a total of 11 times (four to Blackwood, seven to Hahndorf). On three occasions Blackwood and Hahndorf have played each other with Hahndorf winning on all three occasions (2012 by 6 points, 2014 by 38 points and 2015 by 19 points).

Across the eight grand finals played since 2010, the winning side has scored on average 64.5 points at 58.8% accuracy whilst the runner up has scored on average 32.5 points at 41.2% accuracy. The highest scoring grand final came in 2011 with a combined total of 131 points scored between the Hahndorf and Mt Barker.

Four of the last eight grand finals have been at Lobethal Oval. The larger venue has an impact on the score with the average in these matches is a combined total of 79.0 points compared to 115.0 in the other four matches at Balhannah and Hahndorf. The winner in the four matches at Lobethal has scored on average 57.5 points.

Getting an early lead is important in a junior colts grand final. Only once in the last eight grand finals as the winner come from behind at half time. That occurred in 2012 when Hahndorf trailed Blackwood by two points at the main break. The other seven junior colts grand finals the winner has lead at half time by an average of 19.7 points.

First quarters are also the highest scoring quarters across the last eight grand finals with an average of 29.6 points in total whilst the ‘premiership’ quarter being the lowest scoring quarter averaging 21.0 points in total.
