A dominate nine goal to one final quarter has helped secure the third victory of 2021 for the Blackwood Football Club.

Trailing by six points at the final break, the Woods received some strong words of advice from coach Scott Prebble which seemed to work as they ran rampant over the top of the Devils in the final period.

Speaking post match, Prebble said it was a tough match and a great team win. “The Devils brought a solid game style in the first three quarters. We really had to grind our way through the match. It was pleasing to see the team stick to the game plan and the rewards came in the last period with nine goals.”

“Often you would hear the phrase, it was a great character building victory. I would more look at it as it was a great team game with a team full of character.”

The Woods entered the clash with five changes to the side from the previous week. Infront of a large crowd which included a past players day, the Devils jumped out of the blocks kicking four goals to one in the opening period. Peter Giannes got the Devils off to the perfect start kicking the opening goal from a forward 50 boundary throw in. Further goals to Declan Carmody, Henry Welsby and Connor Milde saw the home side up amd about. The Woods managed to get one major through ruck Jan Warbout who took a strong pack mark at the top of the goal square.

Kicking up the hill with the breeze in second, the Woods began to get onto in the middle through the likes of Daniel Benson and Matt Tuck. Star forward Joel Aish kicked the opening goal of the term through an acute angle set shot. Alex Scott kicked the second for the Woods shortly after through a strong contested mark. Harry Weeks replied for the Devils much to the delight of the crowd seeing his side take a 12 point lead into the rooms at the long break.

Weeks got the Devils off to the perfect start in the third kicking a 40 metre set shot courtesy of a high tackle free kick. Kicking into gear Patrick Hillard found goal Aish on the lead to kick his second and fourth for the Woods. When skipper Ryan Dijksman kicked a goal afew minutes later the margin was back to a solitary goal at the final break.

Stepping on the accelerator, the Woods kicked four quick goals at the start of the quarter to blow the game wide open. Jaci Faehrmann hit the scoreboard, whilst Aish, Scott and Harry Wake all converted truly. Running over the top of the Devils with speed and skill, the Woods kicked a further goals through Baldissera, Dijksman, Johnson, Scott to see a 45 point victory when the final siren sounded.

Youngster Patrick Hillard was awarded best player for his multiple touches on the wing, with Eduard Van Den Berg, Tuck, Sam Zevenboom and Daniel Bennetts also featuring in the best players.
