Round 14 Blackwood stalwarts Nick Byrne
& Tavis Kleinig celebrated personal milestones in style last
Saturday as the Woods accounted for Hahndorf by 44 points at Windy Hill. Both Byrne and Kleinig were acknowledged for their 200th and 100th match for the club respectively, as they burst through the banner to jubilant approval of the Woods supporters prior to the clash against Hahndorf. The Magpies were first out of the blocks in the opening quarter, posting the first goal as they kicked down the hill in balmy conditions. Hahndorf held a decisive height advantage in their defenders, but were caught out in the speed department as centurion game player Kleinig led strongly and capitalised with few problems to level the ledger. The Magpies ball use was below par as they failed to hit up leading targets on a regular basis. As a result, Blackwood counter-attacked and Simon McCormick's first major for the afternoon handed the hosts an eight point break.
Adam Whitaker marks strongly. Shaun Price cuts off another Mapie attack. An undisciplined act by one of Hahndorf's senior players proved costly as Adam Read added an easy goal after consecutive 25m penalties as some "feeling" began to creep into the game. A "David & Goliath" stoush between Jason Pope and Hahndorf big man Tim Nicholas, saw both players cooling their heels on the bench with a yellow card late in the stanza. A scrambled kick in the goal square managed to reduce the Magpies deficit to 12 points at the first change.
Paul Magarey breaks a tackle. Nick Byrne flies for a mark. A dour deadlock ensured for the majority of the second term, as neither side could break free. Points were on offer early until the Woods finally broke the line and Brad Jones snapped truly on his left foot. Not to be denied, Hahndorf answered back with two consecutive majors to reduce the Woods lead to just the solitary goal at half-time. In the third quarter, Blackwood came out with all guns blazing, however its scoring radar was off centre, as they compiled six successive points after undertaking an avalanche of attacking entries. A ruck infringement free kick to Blackwood was reversed and proved costly as the Magpies capitalised with a goal, before quickly adding another to close the gap to just 3 points. However, it proved to be the last goal of the match for Hahndorf, as McCormick and a "saluting" Pope added a further two goals to the Woods tally, giving the Woods a 19 point lead at the final change.
"AJ" Ridley marks in a nest of Magpies. Simon McCormick only has eyes for the ball. Another 25m indiscretion by the Magpies early in the final stanza seemed to be the catalyst for the Woods to "click" into gear, as they posted the final five goals of the match. Fittingly, Byrne joined Kleinig on the goal scoring list, while the "wily" McCormick rounded out the fourth term with his fifth goal of the match. Both Byrne and Kleinig were chaired from the ground in front of the Woods supporter faithful, as Blackwood registered its 11th victory for the season. Though struggling to shed the shackles in the opening half, the Woods rammed home their advantage by kicking 7-10 to 1-8 in the second half. Simon McCormick was again best on ground with his five goals in another dominant display, while Josh Sidebottom has been a model of consistency in the midfield and across halfback as has Aaron Ridley. Simon Price marshalled centre half back, ably assisted alongside by Michael Magarey. The Woods now venture to Cherry Gardens to do battle with arch rival, Ironbank, on the small confines of "Thunder Park". extracts from the Courier.
Nick Byrne & Tavis Kleing chaired off after the win. The B Grade were untroubled in their 86 point victory over the Magpies. Leading at every change, the Bs finished of Hahndorf by booting 6-2 to 0-1 in the final quarter. Paddy McKay led the goalkickers with 5 goals, while Sam Leverenz, promoted from the C grade, was impressive with his 4 majors. Nathan Lewis was dangerous, as always, up forward, and Phil Hopton put in a good performance to see him push for A grade selection. Youngsters Harry Darcy and David Ewers also were prominent in a solid victory. Kai Heinsen & David Ewers play follow the leader.
The Central under 17s had their first reality check, losing their first game for the season to Hahndorf by 11 points in the Courier Cup Final. The Magpies, bolstered by the return of their Sturt representatives, jumped the Woods in the first quarter racing out to a 4-5 to 0-1 lead at the first break, and although out-scoring Hahndorf 8-4 to 5-5 for the rest of the game, the damage was done. Again, Lachie Richter's name was high in the best as his consistent season continues, as does Declan Winras'. Kostas Kubilius, John Currie and Matty Waldron with his three goals were also solid performers for the Woods, who will be looking to vent their frustration on Ironbank this week.
Tom Radford flies. Steve Sandford takes a good defensive mark. Josh Bergin makes a strong tackle. The Country under 17s have been on the end of some big hidings against Kangarilla in recent times, but Friday nights game saw a marked improvement from the lads. Gregg Dearmans' boys played some great footy in the first half to lead by two goals at quarter time and the game tied up at the main break. However, Kangarilla had a bit more leg power than the Woods in the second phase to run out winners by 41 points, though the improvement in the Country lads is evident. Shaun Yates led the way for the Woods, aided by Luke Evans and Dean Plummer who has been solid in his last few games.Josh Templeton and Sam Speak also played good games for the Woods. The under 15s, like the Central 17s, were slow out of the blocks against Hahndorf and forced to play catch up football all day, finally going down by 47 points to the top side in the under 15s, having to play man on man and try and limit the opposition's scoring opportunities. The backline was under pressure for most of the day and Henry Spurr at centre-half back and Johno Grimes on a back flank did their best to stem the flow. Dre Thompson did his best in a tagging role while Nick Zevenboom did well when moved back into the backline. Pete Watchman's lads are looking forward to getting back in the winners circle this week against Ironbank. The under 13s held out a strong Magpies team to run out 10 point winners. Having been kept scoreless in the first quarter Nick McCarthy's boys fought back to lead by 2 points at half-time, and with the lead just the single point at the last change, an exciting last quarter ensued. But the Woods peppered the Hahndorf defence and added 1-4 to just the solitary behind from the Magpies to come out on top. Hartley Town was named as best along with captain, Cam Mattner and Jack Murphy. Others to play well were Liam McCarthy, Conner Burley and Jacob McCarthy who booted two goals.
